Writing

During this writing unit, you will practice utilizing the writing process as a whole. This is not a unit where you will quickly write a first draft and hand in the paper for points. Instead, you will take the writing process step-by-step and hand in a polished, finalized piece of writing.

Step One: Choose your Topic

Option One: It has been said, "Not everything that is learned is contained in books." Compare and contrast knowledge gained from experience with knowledge gained from books. In your opinion, which source is more important? Why?
Option Two: Learning about the past has no value for those of us living in the present. Do you agree or disagree? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.
Option Three: Describe a custom from your country that you would like people from other countries to adopt. Explain your choice, using specific reasons and examples.

Step Two: Thesis Statement

Each option asks you to take a stance. Choose your stance and write a strong thesis statement explaining your stance. Remember, your thesis statement is one sentence that tells the main idea of your entire essay. All of your examples in the essay will support your thesis statement.

Step Three: Outline

Create an outline of your essay. Your outline must provide three main examples that support your thesis statement. Each main idea will need specific examples for support.

Step Four: Rough Draft

Write a rough draft of your essay using your outline.

Step Five: Peer Edit

Have a classmate, and someone outside of class read your work.

Step Six: Revise and Rewrite

Using the feedback from your editors, revise and rewrite your essay.

Step Seven: Final Draft

Hand in a polished essay.
